Driven by a Passion for “Back to Roots” Living
Peace Country Milling & Grains was founded in the early 1980s by Bill and Jean Hoag. Bill, a farmer and former Purity Flour salesman, and Jean, a schoolteacher from a printing family, embraced a vision of 'back to the roots' living.
Foundations of Organic Farming
Bill and Jean Hoag began farming organically on Bill's old homestead near the scenic Smoky River in Northern Alberta, setting up a mill to grind their organic grain. The joy of milling their first bag of flour marked the beginning of their journey to share wholesome food from the land.
A New Chapter
Over the years, Bill and Jean Hoag formed a friendship with Roy and Judy Toews, longtime grain and cattle farmers. In the mid-90s, the Toews family took over the mill, advancing the vision by bringing organic flour into more homes through their craft, reaching organic grocery centres and health food stores.
As time passed, circumstances changed, leading to the sale of the mill. In 2019, we, Lyle and Starla Toews and Co., took over the business, and a new chapter is unfolding.
Our Vision
In a fast-paced world, there’s a longing for quiet moments and cherished family memories. Our family-run mill is dedicated to providing nourishing grains and healthy flour for those special occasions. Whether it's a whole wheat pancake to start your day or a slice of fresh wholegrain bread at dinner, we believe in creating warmth and memories. As your neighbors, we want the best for you.
Our Milling Process
We source our grains from trusted local farmers, ensuring that every batch is of the highest standard. Our milling process combines age-old techniques with contemporary technology, ensuring that all the nutrients and flavours are preserved.
